Bio-Touch Research Project in Tucson

Dr. Kenna Stephenson of the University of Texas - Tyler designed this study, Bio-Touch: an Essential Part of Aging, for residents of Campana Del Rio Center, an assisted living facility. The study began in April 2005 and will be conducted for one year with 50 people who have agreed to be part of the project. Most of the folks are in their 80s and 90s and they are having a blast with Bio-Touch.

The objectives are 1) to study the effect of Bio-Touch on infection rate, recovery rate, healthcare service use and health complications; 2) to study the effects of Bio-Touch on biurnal salivar cortisol and blood hormone levels of oxytocin, testosterone and insulin; 3) to study the effects of Bio-Touch on Quality of Life Measures in elderly and very elderly subjects.

The goal is to provide a holistic, yet practical, model for assisted living centers and other communities - a low-cost, easy to implement program to promote graceful aging, healthy touch and social bonding.
